Independence Day is around the corner and the signature Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Show is back for its 43rd year. This year, the long-running summer light show will launch from Brooklyn Bridge between Pier 1 and Pier 6 on Thursday, July 4. The show starts at 9:20 p.m. and lasts around 25-30 minutes. The best views will be throughout lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights. You can access viewing points by public transportation and avoid the hassle of parking, which we don’t need to tell you will be scarce. Here are the top spots to watch fireworks this Independence Day:
Head to Broad Street and Water Street for a view like no other from the deep south of NYC. Or set up shop at Pearl Street and Dover Street, where you’ll be front row when the sky lights up. Robert F. Wagner Sr. Place and St. James Place is the preferred viewing spot on the north side of the bridge. If that spot is too jampacked, the viewing point at Pearl Street and St. James Place is just a stone’s throw away. If you prefer a view from the Lower East Side, you can join your fellow New Yorkers at Market Street and Cherry Street or at Pike Slip and Cherry Street. Both of these spots are near the Manhattan Bridge, while another spot, Montgomery Street and Cherry Street, is a few blocks north and three blocks from the bridge, giving you the perfect angle to catch the action.
If you’re in Brooklyn, you don’t need to cross the bridge to see the nighttime sparklers. Brooklyn Bridge Park is a prime spot for viewing the fireworks. It’s open to the public on July Fourth, so prepare for a sizable crowd. Visit the park’s website for designated entrances, park rules and general information. If the park is already maxed out when you show up, you should be able to find a spot along Furman Street, near the water, to watch the show safely.
A Rooftop or Pier
1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge will open their rooftop space for Brooklynites to get the perfect view of the lit sky. You can enjoy a pre-fix dinner before the show, book a hotel package, or purchase tickets for their viewing party on the rooftop or in the lounge. Visit their website for all available packages.
Celebrate Independence Day with an all-inclusive pier party complete with a barbecue buffet and DJ. Freedom Fest NYC has everything you need for a premier Independence Day celebration. The party boasts food, an open bar, a DJ, and of course a great spot to watch the show.
On the Water
If you prefer a more celebrity-esque celebration this Fourth, go with a cruise that puts you right on the river for the evening’s show. New York Water Taxi, Empire Cruises, North River Lobster Co., Liberty Belle, and the Capitol Princess offer cruise packages for different budgets. You’ll want to reserve your seat soon, because the New York elite will act quickly for seats on any one of these exclusive cruises.
